Location: Twelve Mile Lake, near Minden, Ontario
Sheltered among gorgeous old growth pines along the southeast shores of Twelve Mile Lake, Family Ties cottage is what family cottaging, with a few modern conveniences, is all about. Accommodating nine guests- with a maximum of six adults, this four-bedroom cottage offers a pleasant location for the next family vacation.
Inside the cottage, an open concept kitchen-living area. Equipped with a fridge, stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, regular drip coffee maker, kettle, toaster, along with other cooking essentials. The dining area seats eight to ten. Able to sleep nine, (maximum six adults), this cottage has a total of four bedrooms. Three bedrooms off to one side, one with a queen bed, second with two singles and the third offers child size single bunks, and a master bedroom, with a king bed, on the upper level. There are one and a half bathrooms on the main floor, side by side. For those cooler evenings, or for some added ambience, there is a propane fireplace featured in the living area, with a view of the lake.
The newly added back deck, seats six people comfortably. A great place to enjoy your morning coffee and listen to the birds. A standard BBQ is also provided.
Please be aware that this lake has had recurring issues with swimmer’s itch. It is a temporary skin infection usually occurring after swimming in shallow water when lake and river temperatures rise. Usually late June to early September. You may experience an itchy rash. It could last up to a week. It isn’t known to be dangerous, and it will not spread. Swimming and wading are not advised. The water is good for canoeing or sitting on the beach. Pets can be affected too. Most cases of swimmer’s itch get better on their own. Toweling off or having a shower right after swimming helps. Over the counter medications such as anti-itch creams, calamine, or nonprescription antihistamines also help. You could check with a pharmacist or your family doctor.
The lake is across the single-lane cottage road, which is only used by local occupants. A canoe provides water transport to explore the long, languid shores of Twelve Mile Lake.
The cottage is near the village of Carnarvon. Carnarvon Family Golf is an enjoyable family outing or take a short trip to the nearby Boshkung Brewing to sample the latest in craft beer and great pub fare. For an up-scale dinner outing try the local Rubarb restaurant nearby.
Listen to the soothing rhythm of the water lapping against the shore while you enjoy a summer’s afternoon. Embrace the panoramic view of this large and picturesque lake facing west and feel the stress of the busy world fall away. Take refuge in the simple pleasures of cottage life, family, friends and easy living. The cottage is set among the rocks, trees and water, typical of the Kawartha Highlands, adorned with white pines and cedars. These natural surroundings and cooling summer breezes off the lake enhance the outdoor cottage experience.
