Flutterboards, FloatiesLocation: Muskoka River, Near Bracebridge, Ontario
Tucked among towering pine trees and overlooking the Muskoka River, the Modern Love summerhouse offers a tranquil retreat designed to restore and inspire. From the moment you arrive, a sense of calm settles in—soft natural textures, warm wood tones, and the gentle sound of nature create an atmosphere that feels both grounding and luxurious.
A mid-century design leans into a serene, zen-inspired aesthetic. Clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and thoughtfully chosen décor of paintings and sculptures evoke a sense of harmony. Only 15 minutes away from downtown Bracebridge, this space finds the balance between the serenity of nature and the excitement of a small town within reach.
The primary bedroom has a king-sized bed, large sliding glass doors, and a private en-suite. Soft linens, neutral palettes, and calming details transform this room into a peaceful sanctuary. The second bedroom has two single beds, and windows that welcome natural light. Pass though the covered breezeway to find the third bedroom, equipped with four single beds, and storage drawers underneath each bedframe, perfect for kids and teens to spend time socializing.
Modern Love is a one-floor cottage that has two spa-like bathrooms. The primary bedroom ensuite has an accessible, low-rise step in glass shower with bench, toilet, and sink. This bathroom offers a private escape for relaxation and renewal. The second bathroom offers a stand-up shower, toilet, and sink. Classy fixtures including rainfall type shower heads and glass doors complement each bathroom.
Open-concept living spaces are perfect for lively gatherings, laughter echoing through the rooms as friends and family come together. The living room invites time spent in relaxation and conversation through a pair of chairs with footrests, and a three-person couch around a coffee table. For entertainment, a large 60’ smart television and sound bar are mounted on the wall.
The kitchen boasts an induction stove, double-door stainless steel refrigerator, double sink, a pantry full of bakeware, and a variety of small appliances. Two stools are tucked away for convenience when sitting at the island in the kitchen. The banquette style dining table just off the kitchen seats eight or more with a mixture of comfortable cushions and chairs. It’s a place where mornings begin slowly, with coffee in hand and sunlight streaming in, and evenings end wrapped in quiet comfort. The full-length expanse of windows is enjoyable while creating any time-of-day meal.
Indoors and outdoors meet in the large 10x15’ screened-in Muskoka room, which provides an atmosphere to capture the sound of nature and river water going over the gentle rapids. A mixture of two day-beds, two cushioned chairs, a crochet floor pillow, and two side tables encourage time spent here. Skylights in the ceiling provide light during the day, with a lamp keeping the space illuminated by night.
A small area to prepare snacks or drinks features a sink, mini-fridge, and shelves with books, and is close to the Muskoka room for easy access.
The true essence of the cottage is its abundance of windows, inviting the outdoors in from every angle. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, filling each space with natural light.
Polished concrete floors stay naturally cool in the warmer days of summer, and in-floor heating throughout the house offers warmth on chilly summer evenings. Numerous transom windows and sliding glass doors offer an excellent cross breeze when desired.
Yet beneath its calm exterior, the cottage carries an undercurrent of excitement. Outside there is a whimsical garden swing, a fire bowl, and an outdoor dining table with chairs ready for grilled meals on the propane BBQ. Closer to the rivers edge, a screened gazebo offers chairs around a table.
For those wanting to get in the water, numerous water toys are ready to be used including flutter boards, noodles, and lifejackets. It is highly recommended that life jackets be worn in or near the river.
This is more than just a getaway—it’s an experience that blends serenity with energy, simplicity with indulgence. Whether you’re seeking solitude, connection, or a bit of both, the cottage delivers a unique balance: a zen haven that soothes the soul while still leaving room for unforgettable moments.
