Location: Muskoka River, Near Port Sydney, Ontario
Nestled in a wooded nook along the shore of the Muskoka River, this classic log cottage is ideally located between Huntsville and Bracebridge. The interior has been fully renovated with charming touches added, such as colourful backsplash tiling and twig-shaped cupboard handles in the kitchen. Outside, the peacefully flowing water on this section of the river enhances the relaxing vibe of the property. Settle into one of the cottage’s numerous Muskoka chairs and let the melodies of the water and surrounding woodland provide a lovely serenade!More adventurous folks may want to use one of the cottage’s kayaks to explore the river. Bracketed by a set of chutes to the south and a waterfall to the north, the gentle current in this stretch of the waterway makes it easy to travel in either direction and enjoy the scenery. The dock makes it easy to launch a watercraft, and provides a great place for swimming or enjoying a sunny day.
The cottage and bunkie are perched atop a grassy knoll overlooking the waterfront, with the fire pit centrally located in front of the buildings. At one end of the cottage, a sizable deck provides plenty of space to hang out and enjoy the view. The front section is shaded by a tiki umbrella and has a set of four bright blue Muskoka chairs. The rear area, containing a patio table and chairs, is enclosed by a screened canopy. Glass patio doors lead from the deck into the main living room, which flows into the fully equipped kitchen. The bunkie with heater may offer some more adventurous folks a private hangout space in cooler weather.
A doorway off this central part of the cottage leads to a four-season Muskoka room that spans the length of the structure, affording views of the sloping grounds and waterfront. This bright, well-windowed room houses the dining area and a secondary living room. Both this living room and the main one in the heart of the cottage are equipped with comfortable sofas that provide plenty of seating for watching TV, playing games or simply socializing.
On the opposite side of the main living room, a short hallway provides access to the primary bedroom, which has a queen-sized bed, and the cottage’s three-piece bathroom, comprised of a sink, toilet and large walk-in shower. Off the kitchen, a stairway leads down to the cottage’s largest bedroom. It contains two double beds and has a door that opens out to the front lawn, near the fire pit. The one-room bunkie supplies a third sleeping area. It has two single beds and its own little deck at the front – just big enough for a set of Muskoka chairs, and perfect for morning coffee or a private spot to read.
This charming cottage is equipped with a 55” smart TV and unlimited, high-speed internet access. Both the internet and the cellular services are quite reliable here. In addition to television, there are numerous board games and books available at this cottage. There’s also a badminton set for outdoor fun.
Most families visiting this cottage will likely want to take advantage of the beautiful natural setting, whether they are enjoying the waterfront or just hanging out in the yard or on the deck. But, for those wishing to venture off the property, there are many opportunities for entertainment in the nearby communities of Port Sydney, Huntsville and Bracebridge. Port Sydney is known for its excellent public beach, on the shore of popular Mary Lake.
Huntsville and Bracebridge both have a variety of eateries and shops, as well as art galleries, studios and other attractions. For younger cottagers, Santa’s Village in Bracebridge is sure to be a hit! In Huntsville, the Muskoka Heritage Place is a great destination for the whole family, whether the crew wants to walk through the recreated pioneer village or hop on the Portage Flyer, a steam-powered train that once operated in Muskoka and was the world’s shortest commercial railway.
Algonquin Park is a fascinating place to visit both in summer and the winter. For many visitors the deep snow, ease of viewing wildlife, and the vast solitude of Algonquin Park's ski trail network and backcountry are appealing.
For downhill skiers Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area is located just east of Huntsville (about 20 minutes from the cottage). Hidden Valley offers 3 quad chair lifts and 1 tow lift. Arrowhead Provincial Park just north of Huntsville is well known for both summer and winter activities. It has approximately 33 kms of groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails for all levels. Ice skating is also available. Skis, sit-skis, snowshoes, sledge, and ice skate rentals are available during the winter.
The cottage is fully winterized and equipped with a modern gas furnace heating system, making it wonderfully warm and cozy even on the coldest days. For a truly authentic winter experience, the cottage also features bunkie with an electric heater. In addition, a private trail is maintained with regular snow removal throughout the season. There is a sufficient supply of firewood on hand at all times, as a backup to the generator in the case of a short power outage.
Opus on Muskoka is available monthly, in the off-peak season at a discounted price, with excellent connectivity for the work from home opportunity.
