Location: Loon Lake, Near Gravenhurst, Ontario
What does your crew like to do? Ping-pong or pool? Indoor putting, darts or table games? Waterfront activities will likely be on the agenda too! And, perhaps it would be fun to try some stargazing with the cottage’s telescope. This well-equipped place has plenty of options for families or small groups of friends with children of all ages.
Shangraloon was set up with family fun in mind. The spacious downstairs recreation room, which has an excellent assortment of entertainment options, leads into a comfortable Muskoka room that gives access to the grounds. At one side of the cottage, there’s a play structure for younger members of the group and, nearby, a comfortable hammock provides a place for someone to relax while keeping an eye on them!
Just down the hill from the hammock, the spacious dock also offers numerous options for relaxing and having fun. Among the waterfront amenities at this cottage are a pedal boat, a canoe and two kayaks, as well as some inflatable water toys. The water at the end of the dock is close to eight feet deep but there’s a ladder at one side for climbing out. There’s a set of comfortable chairs and a love seat on the deck and, on the rise above the waterfront, half a dozen Muskoka chairs are situated around the fire pit.
The Muskoka room and the large deck above it both overlook the waterfront. As well, a sizable picture window in the living room affords a great view of the lake. The open-concept living area has two comfortable sofas and several chairs, providing ample seating for conversation beside the cozy gas fireplace, watching a movie or just enjoying the outdoor panorama. At the opposite end of this space, the big dining table can seat 10 people.
The well-appointed kitchen, with its horseshoe-shaped counters, has sufficient space for preparing a meal for the group, whether they want to dine indoors or out on the deck, where the barbeque is located. The kitchen has a large gas stove, stainless steel fridge, four-slice toaster, crockpot, blender, food processor, several types of coffee makers and a bean grinder – among other things!
An extended family of 10 can easily be accommodated at this cottage. It has a total of four bedrooms; three of these have queen-sized beds and one has two sets of twin bunk beds, making it a great room for kids to share. Most of the bedrooms are on the main floor but one is on the lower level, where a sofa with a pull-out trundle bed also provides another sleeping option, if the group wants to spread out. There are four-piece bathrooms on both levels. The bathroom on the main floor has a large step-in shower and, downstairs, there’s a deep soaking tub, which may be just the ticket after an intense games night!
At Shangraloon, relaxing and having fun are the recommended priorities. The cottage has unlimited, high-speed internet access, two smart TVs and an incredible assortment of non-electronic games, for both indoors and out. Maybe your crew wants to team up for darts, set up a pool tournament or just practice putting on indoor green.
If you want to venture beyond the cottage property, however, there are plenty of entertainment options in nearby Gravenhurst, starting with the Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre. While you’re in the area, perhaps you’ll want to book a cruise on the RMS Segwun or Wenonah II. Or, maybe you’ll just want to stroll along the Muskoka Wharf boardwalk and do a little shopping or grab a bite to eat.
