Location: Esson Lake, Near Wilberforce, Ontario

Nestled amongst scenic rolling hills a few kilometers east of the historic town of Haliburton, Gold Trout Cottage on lovely Lake Esson is perfect for those seeking a traditional cottage getaway with friends or family (or both!). Just two hours northeast of Toronto and close to the tiny hamlet of Wilberforce, this cozy pet-friendly cottage has everything needed to allow guests to make the most of the great outdoors: superb fishing, great water sports, all-day sunbathing on the extensive dock, two fire pits, and a brand new hot tub for some late-in-the-evening relaxation.

Inside this three-bedroom cottage (plus bunkie), guests can enjoy preparing cottage meals in the bright, freshly decorated kitchen with its well-stocked cookware, or step out onto the front porch with its propane BBQ to grill up a feast. Adjacent the kitchen, which comfortably seats six for dinner, is the cozy rustic living room with its woodstove. Here the weathered pine flooring that prevails throughout the main floor is matched by the pine clad walls, giving the cottage that comfortable, warm and authentic look that’s so popular amongst cottagers. In addition to the great views, guests can enjoy a movie on the new flat screen TV, complete with surround sound and an extensive DVD collection.

Three freshly decorated bedrooms are available come bed time (plus additional beds in the Bunkie). The master bedroom with its king size bed is a real treat with its bright white walls, weathered pine floor and navy blue bedding. Equally cozy and comfortable, bedroom two with its queen bed is decorated floor-to-ceiling in pine (a nice added touch is the collection of matching sleeping bags and extra bedding), while bedroom three (also pine walled) works as a play room / hang out for the kids. (All bedrooms share the nautical-themed three-piece bathroom.)

The real fun at Gold Trout Cottage, though, is outside. From the large deck that runs the length of the cottage you’ll be treated to stunning views down to the peaceful 100’ lakefront with its large dock. In addition to its comfortable patio furniture, including a large umbrella and rockers, the deck area also includes a brand new (and screened in!) six-seater hot tub. The pleasant 20-step walk down to waterfront is easy to navigate and includes a rest area at the first of two fire pits (the second is at the side of the cottage, and both are well stocked with firewood). The large 8 x 20’ dock itself stretches out into the lake and offers commanding views in all directions (it’s also equipped with lounge chairs, and boasts day-round sunshine and great sunset views!). Water activities include 2 kayaks (lifejackets for adults provided), and great swimming off the dock.

Lake Esson is also well known for its fishing, and is well stocked with lake and rainbow trout, rock bass, perch and, if you’re really lucky, the exceptionally rare Haliburton gold trout.
